A player who folds, or declines to make a bet, is said to “drop.” If all the players call the bet, the best hand wins the pot. If any player declines to fold, they are said to “check.” This player is said to “stay in,” because he or she is not required to make a bet.

Depending on the game, a player may be required to place a bet directly into the pot. In this case, the chips are usually plastic or ceramic. Sometimes, the chips are counted to determine who wins. In a game with a low number of players, the pot is won by making the highest bet.
